Try this viral Onion Boil Foil Packets recipe for a simple, flavorful side dish. We are bringing back a taste of simple perfection using basic ingredients cooked together in foil for easy cleanup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large yellow onions
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium heat or preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
  2. Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings, about 1/2 inch thick. Try to keep the layers intact.
  3. Tear off four large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil, about 18 inches long each.
  4. Divide the onion rings evenly among the four pieces of foil, creating four separate piles.
  5. Place one tablespoon of butter on top of the onions in each packet.
  6. Sprinkle each packet with salt and pepper to your taste.
  7. Carefully fold the foil over the onions to create a sealed packet. You want a tight seal to trap the steam.
  8. Place the packets directly on the grill grates or on a baking sheet in the oven.
  9. Cook for 30 to 40 minutes. The onions should be very tender.
  10. Carefully open the packets (watch out for hot steam) and add one tablespoon of water to each packet just before serving to create a little broth.
  11. Serve hot, right from the packet if you wish!

Notes

  • Richard prefers using butter, but you can use olive oil for a slightly different flavor.
  • If you like a bit of tang, add a small squeeze of lemon juice before sealing the packet.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a sprinkle of garlic powder with the salt and pepper.
