This slow cooker pulled pork recipe brings back the comforting taste of homemade BBQ with minimal effort. You simply season a pork shoulder, let your slow cooker do the work, and enjoy incredibly juicy, tender shredded pork perfect for sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth or water
  • 1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Wipe the pork shoulder dry with paper towels.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, paprika, pepper, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper to create your rub.
  3. Rub the spice mixture evenly over the entire surface of the pork shoulder.
  4. Place the seasoned pork shoulder in your slow cooker.
  5. Pour the chicken broth or water around the bottom of the slow cooker.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is completely fork-tender.
  7. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board. It should shred easily.
  8. Shred the pork using two forks. Discard any large pieces of excess fat.
  9. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it with about half a cup of the cooking liquid remaining in the pot to keep it moist.
  10. Serve hot, topped with your favorite BBQ sauce.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, sear the seasoned pork in a hot skillet before placing it in the slow cooker.
  • If the cooking liquid is too thin, you can thicken it slightly with a cornstarch slurry at the end.
  • This pork freezes wonderfully for future quick meals.
