Recreate the famous sweet and savory P.F. Chang’s Mongolian Beef right in your own kitchen. You will achieve tender beef coated in a rich, garlicky soy sauce glaze. This recipe brings back those takeout memories.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce, low sodium
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce, regular
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Cooking oil (vegetable or canola)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, toss the sliced flank steak with 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce and cornstarch until the beef is coated.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the beef to the hot skillet in a single layer (work in batches if necessary) and sear until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef and set it aside.
  4. In the same skillet, combine the beef broth, brown sugar, regular soy sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Cook the sauce, stirring often, until it thickens slightly, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Toss quickly to coat the beef completely in the thickened sauce.
  7. Stir in the sesame oil.
  8. Remove from heat immediately.
  9. Serve hot over steamed rice and garnish with sliced green onions.

Notes

  • Slicing the beef thinly against the grain keeps it tender.
  • Do not overcook the beef when searing; it will continue to cook in the sauce.
  • You can use flank steak or skirt steak for this recipe.
