A recipe for making traditional Navajo fry bread and assembling it into a savory taco.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Ground beef, cooked and seasoned (for topping)
  • Refried beans (for topping)
  • Shredded lettuce (for topping)
  • Diced tomatoes (for topping)
  • Shredded cheddar cheese (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. Gradually add the warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal balls. Cover them and let them rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
  6. Take one dough ball and flatten it into a circle about 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Poke a small hole in the center to prevent puffing in one spot.
  7. Carefully place one piece of dough into the hot oil. Fry for about 1 to 2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  8. Remove the bread with tongs and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining dough.
  9. To assemble the Navajo Taco, place one piece of hot fry bread on a plate.
  10. Layer the toppings: spread refried beans, add seasoned ground beef, then top with lettuce, tomatoes, and shredded cheese.

Notes

  • For fluffier bread, use slightly warmer water when mixing the dough.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan when frying; cook only one or two pieces at a time.
  • You can use leftover chili or stew meat as an alternative savory topping.
