Create juicy smash burgers, reminiscent of classic diner favorites, that will impress your family and friends. This recipe is inspired by years of culinary adventures.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard

Instructions

  1. Divide the ground beef into four equal portions. Gently form each portion into a loose ball, do not overwork the meat.
  2. Preheat your griddle or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Lightly butter the cut sides of the burger buns and toast them on the griddle until golden brown. Set aside.
  4. Place the beef balls onto the hot griddle, leaving space between them.
  5. Immediately smash each beef ball flat with a sturdy spatula or burger press, creating a thin patty. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  6. Cook for 2-3 minutes without moving the patties, until a deep brown crust forms.
  7. Flip the patties and immediately place a slice of American cheese on top of each.
  8. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the burger is cooked to your desired doneness.
  9. Assemble the burgers by placing a cheesy patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Add your favorite optional toppings and then the top half of the bun.
  10. Serve immediately and enjoy your delicious homemade smash burgers.

Notes

  • Using 80/20 ground beef provides the best flavor and juiciness.
  • Do not overwork the ground beef when forming the balls; this keeps the burgers tender.
  • Smash the patties on the griddle for a better crust.
  • Adjust cooking time based on your preferred level of doneness.
