Ingredients
Scale
1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
4 slices deli ham, thinly sliced
4 ounces Gruyere cheese, shredded
1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Pinch of black pepper
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry into 9 equal squares.
Mix the shredded Gruyere cheese with the Dijon mustard and black pepper in a small bowl.
Place one pastry square on the prepared baking sheet. Top it with one slice of ham, then sprinkle about one-quarter of the cheese mixture over the ham.
Place a second pastry square directly on top of the cheese layer. Repeat the layering process: ham, cheese, pastry square.
Place the final pastry square on top to complete the stack. You should have three layers of pastry with two layers of filling. Repeat this stacking process with the remaining ingredients to make three stacks total.
Brush the tops and sides of each stack lightly with the beaten egg wash.
Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
For crispier edges, you can lightly press down on the sides of the stacks before brushing with egg wash.
You can substitute Gruyere with Swiss or sharp white cheddar cheese.
If you want smaller bites, cut the pastry into 16 squares instead of 9.
