Make classic, flavorful ground beef tacos perfect for a fast family dinner. Richard and I bring you this recipe, inspired by the simple, satisfying street food we enjoyed years ago. It is quick, easy, and tastes just like a cherished memory.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) taco seasoning mix
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 12 taco shells or tortillas (hard or soft)
  • Toppings: Shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until fully browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the taco seasoning mix and the water. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated and the meat is well coated with seasoning.
  5. While the meat simmers, warm your taco shells or tortillas according to package directions.
  6. Spoon the seasoned ground beef mixture into the warm shells.
  7. Set out your toppings and let everyone build their own perfect taco.

Notes

  • We prefer using medium-heat ground beef for the best flavor in these simple tacos.
  • If you like a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper with the seasoning.
  • Make sure to drain the fat well after browning the beef for a cleaner taste.
