This is our favorite, easy-to-make classic green bean casserole recipe, perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any family gathering. It delivers the creamy texture and crispy onion topping everyone expects.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Stir in the drained green beans and 1/3 cup of the crispy fried onions. Mix gently to combine everything.
  4. Pour the mixture into your prepared casserole dish.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of crispy fried onions evenly over the top.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly around the edges.
  8. Let it stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can prepare this simple baked side dish ahead of time. Assemble the casserole (without the topping) up to 24 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate. Add 10 minutes to the initial baking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
  • For a Southern green bean casserole variation, stir in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese with the green beans in step 3.
  • If you want a homemade green bean casserole experience, you can substitute the canned soup with a homemade mushroom sauce, but the classic recipe relies on the canned soup for speed.
