Create a festive and fun Countdown Clock Sugar Cookies recipe perfect for New Year’s Eve. These cookies are designed to look like clocks, helping you count down to midnight with a sweet treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped crystallized ginger (optional, for a little sparkle)
  • Royal icing in black, white, and gold
  • Black edible marker

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. If using, stir in the finely chopped crystallized ginger.
  6. Divide the dough in half, flatten each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  9. Use a round cookie cutter to cut out clock shapes. Use a smaller cutter or a knife to create a small circle in the center of some cookies to represent the clock face.
  10. Carefully transfer the cookies to the prepared baking sheets.
  11. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  12. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. Once cooled, decorate the cookies with royal icing. Use black icing for the clock hands and numbers, white for the clock face, and gold for any festive accents.
  14. Use a black edible marker to draw clock hands pointing to midnight on the cookies that don’t have piped icing hands.
  15. Allow the icing to dry completely before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure your butter is truly softened for the best cookie texture.
  • Don’t overmix the dough after adding the flour to prevent tough cookies.
  • Chilling the dough is crucial for easy handling and to prevent the cookies from spreading too much.
  • Get creative with your decorations! You can add edible glitter or sprinkles for extra New Year’s sparkle.
  • These cookies are best enjoyed within a few days of baking.
