This is our classic, comforting French Toast recipe. We soak thick bread slices in a rich egg and milk bath seasoned with vanilla and cinnamon, then pan-fry until perfectly golden brown. It creates a custardy interior and a crisp exterior, just like the best breakfasts we remember.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick bread (Brioche or Challah work well)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined. This is your soaking mixture.
  2. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 20 to 30 seconds per side. You want the center to absorb the liquid without the bread falling apart.
  3. Melt half the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  4. Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
  5. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is deeply golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Add the remaining butter as needed for subsequent batches.
  7. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Using slightly stale or day-old bread helps it absorb the custard better without becoming soggy.
  • For an extra rich center, use half-and-half instead of milk.
  • Dust with powdered sugar or serve with fresh berries and maple syrup.
