Create a hearty and flavorful black bean burger patty that stands up to grilling or baking. This recipe brings the satisfaction of a classic burger in a wonderful vegetarian option.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper (any color)
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Place the rinsed and drained black beans on a paper towel-lined plate. Pat them very dry.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the black beans with a fork until mostly smooth but still having some texture. Do not over-mash into a paste.
  3. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, beaten egg, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the mashed beans.
  4. Mix all ingredients thoroughly until just combined.
  5. Stir in the breadcrumbs until they are incorporated. The mixture should hold its shape when pressed.
  6. Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Form each portion into a firm, round patty, about 3/4 inch thick.
  7. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  8. Carefully place the patties in the hot skillet. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes per side until heated through and a nice crust forms. Alternatively, bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 15 minutes, flipping halfway.
  9. Serve immediately on your favorite buns with your preferred toppings.

Notes

  • Drying the beans well prevents a mushy patty.
  • If the mixture seems too wet, add another tablespoon of breadcrumbs.
  • These patties freeze well once cooked. Cool completely, then wrap individually before placing in a freezer bag.
