Make a superior hot chocolate from scratch using real ingredients for a rich, creamy texture that beats any packet mix.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 ounces semi-sweet or dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the milk, heavy cream, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot but not boiling. Do not let it boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for one minute, then whisk until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Taste and add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter.
  6. Serve immediately in mugs. Top with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired.

Notes

  • For a thicker hot chocolate, whisk in 1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold milk before heating.
  • You can substitute half-and-half for the combination of whole milk and heavy cream for a slightly lighter version.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a Mexican hot chocolate flavor.
