This recipe provides the steps for making a fresh, authentic guacamole with the perfect balance of flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 ripe Hass avocados
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped white onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 1 large lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 medium Roma tomato, seeded and diced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
  2. Add the lime juice immediately and gently mash the avocado with a fork. Mash until you reach your desired consistency, leaving some chunks for texture.
  3. Add the chopped onion, cilantro, minced jalapeño, salt, and cumin to the mashed avocado. If using, add the diced tomato now.
  4. Gently fold all ingredients together until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Taste the guacamole and adjust the salt or lime juice as needed.
  6. Serve immediately or press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to prevent browning before serving.

Notes

  • To keep guacamole green longer, place a thin layer of water or lime juice over the surface before covering tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerating. Pour off the liquid before serving.
  • For a smoother texture, use a potato masher instead of a fork. For a chunkier texture, use less pressure when mashing.
  • If you prefer less heat, remove all seeds and white pith from the jalapeño before mincing.
