Make a rich, smooth chocolate syrup from scratch in under ten minutes using simple pantry ingredients. This sauce tastes better than store-bought versions and works for milk, ice cream, or coffee.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.
  3. Let the mixture boil gently for 1 minute, stirring occasionally. Do not overcook.
  4. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  5. Allow the syrup to cool completely. It will thicken as it cools.
  6. Pour the cooled chocolate syrup into an airtight container for storage.

Notes

  • For a vegan option, use maple syrup instead of granulated sugar, reducing the amount to 3/4 cup.
  • To make this sugar-free, substitute the sugar with 3/4 cup of your preferred granular sweetener blend designed for baking.
  • This syrup is excellent for making homemade chocolate milk or as a mocha sauce for coffee drinks.
  • Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to three weeks.
