Ingredients
Scale
3-4 pound pork shoulder (Boston butt)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1.5 cups apple cider
1/2 cup your favorite barbecue sauce (plus more for serving)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Slider buns
Optional toppings: coleslaw, pickles, extra barbecue sauce
Instructions
Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder.
Season the pork all over with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Place the seasoned pork in your slow cooker.
In a bowl, whisk together the apple cider, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar.
Pour the liquid mixture over the pork in the slow cooker.
Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or on high for 4-5 hours, until the pork is very tender and shreds easily.
Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks.
Skim any excess fat from the cooking liquid in the slow cooker.
Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir it into the liquid. Cook for another 15-30 minutes to allow the pork to absorb the flavors.
Serve the pulled pork on slider buns with your desired toppings.
Notes
You can make this recipe ahead of time. The flavors meld beautifully overnight in the refrigerator.
Adjust the sweetness and tanginess by adding more brown sugar or vinegar to taste after shredding the pork.
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the liquid mixture.
