This is the classic American Goulash, often called American Chop Suey. It is a simple, hearty, one-pot meal featuring ground beef, a rich tomato sauce, and elbow macaroni. It cooks right in your skillet, making cleanup easy. It is perfect for a quick, satisfying family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef and chopped onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Stir in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, beef broth, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  3. Add the elbow macaroni to the skillet. Stir well to combine everything.
  4. Cover the skillet, reduce the heat to low, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the pasta from sticking to the bottom. Cook until the macaroni is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Remove the skillet from the heat. If using, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top and cover for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts.
  6. Serve hot. Enjoy this taste of home!

Notes

  • You can easily substitute ground turkey or ground sausage for the ground beef.
  • For a touch of sweetness, add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the tomato sauce mixture.
  • If the sauce seems too thick before the pasta is done, add a splash more beef broth or water.
  • This dish reheats well the next day.
