Ingredients
Scale
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar plus more for coating
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon plus more for coating
1/4 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy works)
1 large egg
1 tablespoon melted butter or oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons melted butter (for coating donuts after cooking)
Instructions
Whisk together the flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix the milk, egg, melted butter/oil, and vanilla extract.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix. The dough will be sticky.
Lightly flour a clean surface. Turn the dough out. Gently pat or roll the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness.
Use a donut cutter or two different-sized round cutters to cut out the donuts and donut holes.
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
Lightly grease the air fryer basket. Place the donut cutouts in the basket in a single layer, making sure they do not touch. You will need to cook in batches.
Air fry for 4 to 6 minutes, flipping halfway through. They should look lightly golden brown.
While the donuts cook, mix extra cinnamon and sugar for coating in a shallow dish.
Brush the hot donuts immediately with the 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
Toss the buttered donuts in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated. Serve warm.
Notes
For a better rise, do not overmix the dough. Mix only until the dry streaks disappear.
If your dough is too sticky to handle, chill it for 10 minutes before cutting.
To make donut holes, use the center piece you cut out. They cook slightly faster.
If you skip the butter coating, the cinnamon sugar will not stick well to the cooked donuts.
